Days away from the start of the 35th<\/sup> annual Public Service Recognition Week, let\u2019s not forget the way this year began for many government employees\u2014with a partial government shutdown for nearly 400,000<\/a> federal employees. This is a good week to honor the tireless work of public servants and keep working to repair whatever damage remains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\nare some suggestions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Demonstrate\nyour gratitude <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the shutdown officially ended, you may have greeted<\/a>\nemployees with enthusiasm\u2014and maybe breakfast\u2014upon their return to work. Have\nyou continued to show appreciation? Next week, set aside time to write\nthank-you notes and emails demonstrating that your employees\u2019 work is vital all\nyear long. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Bring\npeople together<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make your employees feel more connected to\ntheir colleagues, consider having a team lunch or taking a group walk to show\neveryone the culture of your agency matters to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Gather\nemployee feedback<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collecting feedback\u2014either through surveys or\none-on-one discussions\u2014will give you a better idea of how your employees are\nfeeling and what they need to feel supported by agency leadership. You\u2019ll learn\nif there\u2019s something you could be doing to help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Publicize\nPSRW<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure to acknowledge and promote Public Service Recognition Week. Consider writing a blog post, if your agency has a blog, or draft a blurb for your agency\u2019s newsletter, if that\u2019s an option. Find ways to publicize PSRW. Whatever you do, be sure to take the time to recognize your employees\u2019 important contributions to the success of your agency\u2019s mission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
