As a result of his leadership, the team achieved nearly 700 convictions and the recovery of hundreds of millions of dollars.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In 2014, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/servicetoamericamedals.org\/honorees\/omar-prez-aybar-reginald-j-france-joseph-beemsterboer-and-the-miami-heat-teams\/\"><em>P\u00e9rez Aybar<\/em><\/a><em> received the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals Homeland Security and Law Enforcement award for his work.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Yet four years later, P\u00e9rez Aybar enrolled in the Excellence in Government Fellows program, a leadership development opportunity for GS-14 to GS-15 federal employees. Why did you want to participate in EIG? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>P\u00e9rez Aybar: <\/strong>It was\nhumbling to win a Sammies for exhibiting some technical leadership attributes.&nbsp; Knowing there are levels to the ever-evolving\nart of leadership, I have been seeking ways to increase my leadership\ncapability. Since I would like to reach the Senior Executive Service, I began looking\nat my agency\u2019s performance expectations for SES members. I researched what the\nEIG program offered and realized they aligned nicely with the expectations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Partnership: <\/strong>What\nskills are you hoping to develop in EIG?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>P\u00e9rez Aybar: <\/strong>Managing\nchange, or leading through change, is one skill I would like to hone. I am in\nhealth care, an industry that is always changing, especially now with\nelectronic health records. I know there are going to be some paradigm shifts\nthat we are going to have to address and the EIG program will help prepare me\nto lead my team.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, overuse of a skill can make it dull. I think\nEIG can act as a stone, one I can use to make certain skills sharp again. Possibly\nby learning to apply a previously learned skill differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Partnership: <\/strong>Why\ndo you think leadership is so important?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>P\u00e9rez Aybar: <\/strong>I\nbelieve you can <em>change<\/em> that which is\nin your immediate control, but you can <em>influence<\/em>\nthat which is not. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is physically and mentally demanding; there is usually\na two- or three-month window where we grind to meet our projections. This\nhappens year after year. Some of the agents feel a bit fatigued. The reality is\nwe can\u2019t change that. So, I try to express to them, \u201cDuring the nine or 10 months\nwhen you\u2019re not grinding, what do you want to focus on? Take advantage of that\ntime to identify the areas you want to improve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Partnership: <\/strong>Practically\nspeaking, what\u2019s your approach to managing and supporting your employees? How\ndo you maximize the influence you can have?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>P\u00e9rez Aybar: <\/strong>I\nhave a Scrabble board in my office. Employees will come in, and I\u2019ll challenge\nthem to a round. Through this engagement, I\u2019m seizing an opportunity to get to\nknow my employees\u2014I\u2019m building trust. It\u2019s not always about the work. Sometimes,\nI\u2019ll put out an email and say, \u201cHey, on this day and time, I\u2019m going to be at\nPanera or wherever. Whoever wants to show up, just show up. We\u2019re not talking\nwork, we\u2019re just going to talk about life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We say, \u201cMission first, people always.\u201d How are we making\ngood on that? I\u2019m always looking for opportunities to challenge the status quo,\nto cut through the rat race. I think that becomes the vehicle for influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"border-width:1px;border-color:#449d44;border-style:solid\" data-bg-color-opacity=\"25\" data-border-color=\"#449d44\" data-border-thickness=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-pps-gutenberg-blocks-styled-container pps-styled-container\">\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interested in becoming a stronger leader?
