{"id":9020,"date":"2019-03-08T19:13:51","date_gmt":"2019-03-09T00:13:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/opsweb.wpengine.com\/?p=9020"},"modified":"2022-05-17T13:31:11","modified_gmt":"2022-05-17T17:31:11","slug":"recognition-for-outstanding-federal-workers-should-be-the-norm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/blog\/recognition-for-outstanding-federal-workers-should-be-the-norm\/","title":{"rendered":"Recognition for outstanding federal workers should be the norm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It\u2019s easy to find stories about public\nservice heroes in times of crisis, whether they\u2019re rescuing families and\nrestoring infrastructure following a natural disaster, caring for patients and\nstopping the spread of disease, or providing essential public safety even while\ntheir paychecks are withheld due to a lapse in government funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what about when our communities\nand government are operating as usual?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, the Office of Management\nand Budget and the General Services Administration announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.performance.gov\/gearawards\/winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2019\nGears of Government Hall of Winners<\/a>. It\u2019s a new feature on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.performance.gov\/2019-2-25-gears-of-gov-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Performance.gov<\/a> that honors more than 150 individuals and teams, from\nmore than 20 federal agencies, who have improved the lives of others or made\nour government better. These success stories don\u2019t often make headlines, but they display the tremendous\nimpact public servants are making across government and throughout our country.<br>\n<br>\n\u201cFederal employees work every day to deliver mission, service and stewardship\nfor the American people,\u201d said Margaret Weichert, deputy director for OMB and\nacting director at the Office of Personnel Management. \u201cThe Gears of Government\nAwards celebrate the profound impacts that feds are having across the United\nStates, whether it\u2019s combating identity theft, improving life for veterans or\nmaking medications more affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best ways to help our\ngovernment continue to improve is to highlight the many ways it\u2019s performing\nwell. Recognition is more than just making\npeople feel good\u2014it encourages high performers to get even better, take on\nbigger challenges and learn best practices from one another. When those lessons and best practices spread throughout\nthe federal workforce, performance as a whole will improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Partnership, we know excellence\nin public service is the norm, not the exception. Our goal is to make\nrecognition of government\u2019s success stories the norm, not the exception.\nThrough our annual <a href=\"https:\/\/servicetoamericamedals.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Samuel\nJ. Heyman Service to America Medals<\/a>, we\u2019ve highlighted more than 500 individuals and teams\nfor their outstanding accomplishments. The Sammies have generated local and\nnational news coverage, including stories in TIME, The Atlantic, The Washington\nPost, Fox News, NPR and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognition is more than media\nattention. It\u2019s often as simple as noticing and saying thank you to airport\nsecurity officers, park rangers or any other federal workers you interact with.\nLet them know their work is valued and appreciated, even when no crisis is\ninvolved. If you happen to work with high-performing federal employees,\ncelebrate their achievements and nominate them for the Service to America\nMedals program, government-wide programs such as the Gears of Government\nAwards, and your agency\u2019s tailored recognition programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, help us share these stories.\nEncourage your friends and family members to check out the Gears of Government\nand Sammies honorees. Give the finalists and award winners a shoutout on social\nmedia.
