While a smaller federal government may be a reasonable goal, these stories reveal how the administration\u2019s unprecedented\u2014and often haphazard\u2014cuts have disrupted lives and harmed communities nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We analyzed more than 530 of the news stories featured on the map to provide a snapshot of the impact of these cuts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<iframe title=\"Harms Snapshot \u2013 Cost to Your Community Map\" aria-label=\"Stacked Bars\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-E0c30\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/E0c30\/5\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" height=\"1317\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><script type=\"text\/javascript\">window.addEventListener(\"message\",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll(\"iframe\");for(var t in a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"][t]+\"px\";r.style.height=d}}});<\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-education-schools-nbsp-universities-nbsp-and-research-funding-nbsp\">Education: Schools,&nbsp;universities&nbsp;and research funding&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Program cuts&nbsp;and&nbsp;funding freezes&nbsp;at the Education Department\u2014and&nbsp;now plans to effectively shutter the agency\u2014have affected&nbsp;after-school and literacy programs, mental health services, and school repair and construction projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color:#f3f3f4;border-width:1px;border-color:#000000;border-style:solid\" data-bg-color=\"#f3f3f4\" data-bg-color-opacity=\"100\" data-border-color=\"#000000\" data-border-thickness=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-pps-gutenberg-blocks-styled-container pps-styled-container pt-4 pb-2\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/federal-harms-tracker\/cost-to-your-community\/?state=NC&amp;cd=nc-07&amp;layer=count_employees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">On the Map<\/a>:&nbsp;The abrupt cancellation&nbsp;of millions in federal funding&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wunc.org\/education\/2025-04-03\/federal-education-cuts-poorest-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ended critical building repairs<\/a>&nbsp;in multiple North Carolina school districts and&nbsp;impacted&nbsp;schools in some of the state&#8217;s poorest areas,&nbsp;including Robeson and Richmond counties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Universities also lost funding for research programs, causing faculty layoffs and reduced financial support for students through scholarships and stipends. Experts worry that this will limit long-term innovation in key sectors including biomedical science, energy, agriculture and the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lost more than $2.7 million in federal research funding<\/a>&nbsp;for biological sciences and engineering programs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-agriculture-nbsp-food-nbsp-banks-nbsp-and-nbsp-farmers-nbsp-nbsp\">Agriculture:&nbsp;Food&nbsp;banks&nbsp;and&nbsp;farmers&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Program cuts at the Agriculture Department have threatened food banks, jeopardized farmers\u2019 income, interrupted school lunch initiatives and reduced meal programs for underserved groups like senior citizens.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color:#f3f3f4;border-width:1px;border-color:#000000;border-style:solid\" data-bg-color=\"#f3f3f4\" data-bg-color-opacity=\"100\" data-border-color=\"#000000\" data-border-thickness=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-pps-gutenberg-blocks-styled-container pps-styled-container pt-4 pb-2\">\n<p><a emergency preparedness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fema.gov\/grants\/mitigation\/learn\/building-resilient-infrastructure-communities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities<\/a>&nbsp;grants&nbsp;from FEMA have been rescinded across the country, causing the cancellation of disaster-&nbsp;and climate-resilient infrastructure projects.&nbsp;These cancellations&nbsp;leave&nbsp;state and local communities&nbsp;more vulnerable&nbsp;to&nbsp;flooding, hurricanes, wildfires,&nbsp;landslides&nbsp;and earthquakes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color:#f3f3f4;border-width:1px;border-color:#000000;border-style:solid\" data-bg-color=\"#f3f3f4\" data-bg-color-opacity=\"100\" data-border-color=\"#000000\" data-border-thickness=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-pps-gutenberg-blocks-styled-container pps-styled-container pt-4 pb-2\">\n<p><a Corporation&nbsp;for&nbsp;Public Broadcasting have also&nbsp;affected&nbsp;emergency response services, with many rural Americans relying on public radio as their main source of information during a natural disaster.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"background-color:#f3f3f4;border-width:1px;border-color:#000000;border-style:solid\" data-bg-color=\"#f3f3f4\" floods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
