Only 27% disagree while another quarter are unsure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<iframe title=\"About half of Americans are seeing consequences of the government shutdown on their community\" aria-label=\"Stacked Bars\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-wjh3h\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/wjh3h\/1\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" height=\"310\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><script type=\"text\/javascript\">window.addEventListener(\"message\",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll(\"iframe\");for(var t in a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"][t]+\"px\";r.style.height=d}}});<\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey was conducted about a week into the shutdown and shows that a large portion of the country is noticing consequences resulting from the furloughs of civil servants and the disruption of services across the government.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The percentage of people who say the shutdown is impacting their community differs by political affiliation\u2014a finding that aligns with <a href=\"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/publications\/the-state-of-public-trust-in-government-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previous Partnership research<\/a> that showed&nbsp; partisan identity influences how Americans think about the federal government. Fully 69% of self-identified Democrats are seeing an impact, compared with 27% of Republicans and 38% of independents.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked to describe <a href=\"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/federal-harms-tracker\/cost-to-the-shutdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">specific consequences<\/a> they are seeing, many respondents cited travel and airline delays. Others mentioned how they, or someone close to them, are unable to work or receive paychecks. A few referred to limited services available at national parks and potential outcomes for health insurance.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These results come from a nationally representative survey of 1,096 Americans conducted by the Partnership from Oct. 9-13, 2025, using the <a href=\"https:\/\/amerispeak.norc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AmeriSpeak<\/a> omnibus survey and probability panel produced by NORC at the University of Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-one-quarter-of-americans-say-the-shutdown-is-impacting-them-personally\">One-quarter of Americans say the shutdown is impacting them personally<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fewer Americans say they have been personally affected by the shutdown than their community. About one-quarter (26%) say the shutdown has impacted them directly, compared with 56% who say it has not and 18% who are unsure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<iframe title=\"&quot;The shutdown of the federal government has impacted me personally.&quot;\" aria-label=\"Table\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-lpFpY\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/lpFpY\/1\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" height=\"318\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><script type=\"text\/javascript\">window.addEventListener(\"message\",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll(\"iframe\");for(var t in a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"][t]+\"px\";r.style.height=d}}});<\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Democrats (38%) are more than twice as likely to say they have been impacted than Republicans (16%) or independents (17%).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-americans-are-concerned-about-the-impact-of-mass-firings\">Americans are concerned about the impact of mass firings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Americans are expressing significant apprehension about how large-scale federal workforce cuts could affect both individuals and the wellbeing of the broader community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<iframe title=\"&quot;If there are a lot of firings of federal employees during the shutdown, how concerned would you be about the impact on you and your community?&quot;\" aria-label=\"Table\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-1rKZa\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/1rKZa\/2\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" height=\"343\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><script type=\"text\/javascript\">window.addEventListener(\"message\",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll(\"iframe\");for(var t in a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"][t]+\"px\";r.style.height=d}}});<\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>About half of Americans (49%) say they would be concerned about the impact on their communities \u201cif there are a lot of firings of federal employees during the shutdown.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey was conducted Oct. 9-13, during which the Trump administration announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/us-government-workforce-cuts-have-begun-omb-chief-says-2025-10-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">layoffs of thousands of federal employees<\/a> on Oct. 10. The legality of those layoffs has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govexec.com\/workforce\/2025\/10\/trump-admin-vows-comply-court-order-layoffs-some-cuts-may-still-be-imminent\/408888\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">challenged in court<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fewer people (38%) say they are not concerned while 13% were unsure.
