Translate your federal experiences\u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Federal communicators bring strong experience in organizational leadership, project management, crisis management and more. But they may have to do some translating to ensure future employers appreciate the full value of this expertise.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rebecca Grapsy encouraged federal employees looking for a job to tailor their resumes to the role they are applying for. \u201c[A] resume is not a background check, it&#8217;s a marketing document,\u201d she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panelists also encouraged job seekers to seek opportunities where their values align with those of a future employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-nurture-your-networks\" style=\"text-transform:none\">2. Nurture your networks<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Relationships with colleagues, supervisors, mentors and others can help job seekers find new opportunities. Natalia Vanegas talked about using \u201cLinkedIn strategically, whether that\u2019s reaching out to potential employers or following up after applying for a job.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other panelists described how fostering relationships with the people they work with\u2014both during and after a job\u2014can open new doors to future opportunities and help inform career transitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a referral or a point of contact in an organization can help job seekers get their foot in the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-keep-exploring-nbsp\" style=\"text-transform:none\">3. Keep exploring&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Career paths are not linear, so it is helpful to stay flexible about what a new job might look like. Panelists cautioned job seekers that it can take two or three times longer than they expect to land a job. Sometimes unexpected roles can help strengthen skills and potentially open a door to more opportunities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leah Hunter talked about how people around her \u201c[had] this \u2018aha!\u2019 moment\u201d where they realized what they were passionate about and what career they wanted to pursue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cI was curious in exploring careers outside public service, but, in the end, I came back to public service. [Give] yourself permission to think about something different or go a different direction,\u201d she said, reflecting on her own path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-practice-self-care\" style=\"text-transform:none\">4. Practice self-care<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Transitions can be stressful, so self-care is important. Job seekers should use the time in between jobs to be productive in their communities, networks or professional development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And taking time to rest and relax is important, too. \u201cIt might be hard to take care of yourself or find time to relax, but it&#8217;s important\u2014because you don\u2019t want to start a new job feeling exhausted or thinking, \u2018I don\u2019t even know how I\u2019m going to walk in on the first day with a smile,\u2019\u201d Keys said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panelists encouraged job seekers to find an activity, whether reading, a hobby or taking a course, that can shift their mindset and expand their skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p
