Whether you are a recently terminated federal employee looking to transition within the public sector, explore opportunities in the private sector or strengthen your professional network, understanding how to use LinkedIn effectively can help you stand out. A well-crafted LinkedIn profile will:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Showcase your transferable skills, experience and accomplishments in public service\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Expand your professional network within and beyond the public sector\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep you informed about relevant job openings, industry trends and networking opportunities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-steps-to-get-you-started\">10 steps to get you started<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-update-your-linkedin-profile-photo\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700;text-transform:none\">1. Update your LinkedIn profile photo\u00a0<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Select a clear, high-resolution photo that is representative of who you are and what role you seek. Make sure the photo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/business\/talent\/blog\/product-tips\/tips-for-taking-professional-linkedin-profile-pictures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">takes up at least 60% of the frame<\/a>, wear what you would wear to work and crop the image from the shoulders up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-create-a-short-video-for-your-profile\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700;text-transform:none\">2. Create a short video for your profile\u00a0<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>A 30-second video of your elevator pitch will give you a creative edge and the opportunity to highlight your goals, share your story and invite people to message you. This is optional, but a video is a great addition to include in your \u201cFeatured\u201d section.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-add-or-update-your-industry\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700;text-transform:none\">3. Add or update your industry\u00a0<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>LinkedIn\u2019s job-matching algorithm is based on the industry you indicate on your profile, allowing recruiters to find and match you with opportunities. If you want to transition to another industry, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/help\/linkedin\/answer\/a595160\/change-the-industry-or-company-information-on-your-profile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">update that part of your profile<\/a> to receive matches that best fit what you are looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-activate-the-open-to-work-feature\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700;text-transform:none\">4. Activate the \u201cOpen to Work\u201d feature\u00a0<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/help\/linkedin\/answer\/a507508\/let-recruiters-know-you-re-open-to-work?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cOpen to Work\u201d feature<\/a> allows you to discreetly signal to recruiters, or share with all LinkedIn users, that you are open to new opportunities. If your current organization has the LinkedIn Recruiter tool for sourcing candidates, you do not show up in the organization\u2019s search. Additionally, if you specify the types of jobs you are interested in and your preferred location, LinkedIn\u2019s algorithm will help your profile show up in the platform\u2019s search results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-draft-a-compelling-headline-and-summary\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700;text-transform:none\">5. Draft a compelling headline and summary\u00a0<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>These two features help you highlight yourself, your goals and your accomplishments.
