The nonpartisan, nonprofit Partnership for Public Service<\/a> today released the following statement from President and CEO Max Stier in response to President Donald Trump\u2019s action to remove more than a dozen Inspectors General from their roles at federal agencies, per news reports: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cInspectors General are the cops on the beat preventing bad things from happening. They identify and stop waste, fraud and abuse across the federal government and their work saves the taxpayer tens of billions of dollars every year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cInspectors General are independent, nonpartisan watchdogs who should not be treated like traditional appointees. Individuals in these critical roles have served from one administration to the next and can only be removed for cause and with notice to Congress, a practice that strengthens their independence, their institutional knowledge and their ability to do their job effectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPresident Trump\u2019s mass dismissal of Inspectors General runs counter to his stated desire to make the federal government more efficient. Congress should step in and play a critical oversight role, as they have done with past presidents, to ensure the best interests of the public and the goal of effective government are kept front and center.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
