The nonpartisan, nonprofit Partnership for Public Service today released the following statement from President and CEO Max Stier<\/strong> in response to President Donald Trump\u2019s executive order placing a freeze on hiring for career roles in federal agencies: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPresident Trump\u2019s directive to freeze federal hiring will make government agencies less responsive to the needs of the public. This order could leave agencies with hiring gaps in critical areas, and it will deter the talented workers needed for a well-functioning government, especially those with specialized skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHiring freezes are management by autopilot rather than a thoughtful choice about where we need more or perhaps fewer federal employees to achieve good outcomes for American taxpayers. As the Government Accountability Office has noted, hiring freezes don\u2019t save money or change the scope of what government must, by law, deliver for the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe administration would be well served to focus instead on reforms that will create a more effective federal workforce. We encourage President Trump and his administration to look at the management fundamentals by making it easier to hire great people and hold them accountable, and for those federal employees to use modern technology and tools to do their jobs and deliver customer-friendly services.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
