{"id":40525,"date":"2024-05-28T11:12:12","date_gmt":"2024-05-28T15:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/?p=40525"},"modified":"2024-05-28T12:29:54","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T16:29:54","slug":"recap-federal-human-capital-conference-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/blog\/recap-federal-human-capital-conference-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"A look back at the Partnership&#8217;s inaugural conference for federal human capital professionals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When the federal human capital community told us that they lacked a convening for practitioners, we answered the call and delivered our inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/resources.ourpublicservice.org\/fhcc24?_ga=2.11981812.1936554239.1708987816-556070532.1708987815&amp;_gl=1*b0la10*_ga*NTU2MDcwNTMyLjE3MDg5ODc4MTU.*_ga_M1YR75DYXV*MTcwOTEyODc1My41LjAuMTcwOTEyODc1My42MC4wLjA.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Federal Human Capital Conference<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over three days in April, <strong>370 human capital professionals<\/strong> across specialties and experience levels from <strong>more than 75 agencies<\/strong> attended in person and virtually to learn from their peers and federal and industry experts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keynote and plenary sessions featured leaders such as Ventris Gibson, director of the U.S. Mint; Kiran Ahuja, then the director of the Office of Personnel Management; and speakers from educational institutions, the private sector and the media.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attendees also participated in nearly 30 breakout session options across three tracks: Talent Acquisition, Thriving Workforce and Back to Basics.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to our post-event survey, 98% of respondents said they would consider attending another Federal Human Capital Conference in the future!&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wpmf-gallerys wpmf-gallerys-life \" data-items=\"[{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https:\\\/\\\/ourpublicservice.org\\\/wp-content\\\/uploads\\\/2024\\\/05\\\/2024-Federal-Human-Capital-Conference-recap-06-1024x683.jpg&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;2024 Federal Human Capital Conference. Here are three takeaways from the event:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-there-is-a-tremendous-appetite-for-actionable-tools-and-strategies-nbsp-nbsp\"><strong>1. There is a tremendous appetite for actionable tools and strategies.&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference provided participants with tools and strategies they can immediately incorporate into their work, covering topics such as:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Implementing new employee orientation and onboarding programs&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using OPM\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/agencyportal.usajobs.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USAJOBS talent portal<\/a> for recruiting and outreach activities&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emphasizing hiring participants in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/policy-data-oversight\/hiring-information\/students-recent-graduates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pathways Programs<\/a> for succession planning&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engaging with a mental health community of practice&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Implementing feedback loops\u2014listening to employee concerns, planning meaningful efforts, acting on plans and communicating impact\u2014into employee engagement projects&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Educating institutions of higher learning about the <a href=\"https:\/\/gogovernment.org\/resources-by-applicant\/call-to-serve-network\/become-a-member\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Federal Advisor Certificate<\/a> Program to boost students\u2019 awareness of and access to federal career opportunities&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-learning-together-as-a-community-is-energizing-nbsp-nbsp\"><strong>2. Learning together as a community is energizing.&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It was rewarding to witness participants commit themselves to learning throughout the conference, as evidenced by continual virtual chats and in-person dialogue.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peer-to-peer learning was celebrated, poignantly so during concluding remarks, when a participant shared how she successfully managed up with an impassioned business case for change after being told no to a solution because \u201cit&#8217;s how things have always been done.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the event, participants shared the following testimonials:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-pps-gutenberg-blocks-quote blockquote\" style=\"border-left:5px solid #0084D4\" data-sidebar_color=\"#0084D4\">\n<p><em>\u201cIt was so great to see people we\u2019ve both worked with at other agencies, and each other, because we mostly work from home. Speakers were amazing. Sessions were on point. I hope you do this again.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cPlease make this an annual event! I truly enjoyed the connections I made with other agency partners. I was also able to reconnect with old colleagues and plan to continue these conversations.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c[I will seek to] mentor newly hired HR professionals.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<footer class=\"blockquote-footer quotee\">2024 Federal Human Capital Conference participants<\/footer><div class=\"job-title\"><\/div><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-artificial-intelligence-is-here-and-it-s-complex-nbsp\"><strong>3. Artificial Intelligence is here, and it\u2019s complex.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Conference speakers discussed AI in various sessions, with many touting the benefits of the technology alongside cautionary notes of lessons learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This technology has the potential to <a href=\"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/blog\/how-our-ai-federal-leadership-program-drives-progress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improve how government works<\/a>, and we must understand it and learn how to use it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2023\/10\/30\/executive-order-on-the-safe-secure-and-trustworthy-development-and-use-of-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safely<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/blog\/perspectives-on-the-ethical-use-of-artificial-intelligence-in-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">responsibly<\/a>.
