{"id":39572,"date":"2024-01-24T15:03:42","date_gmt":"2024-01-24T20:03:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/?p=39572"},"modified":"2024-01-24T15:50:16","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T20:50:16","slug":"building-trust-in-government-a-data-driven-imperative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/blog\/building-trust-in-government-a-data-driven-imperative\/","title":{"rendered":"Building trust in government: A data-driven imperative"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At a time when our democracy faces serious threats, partisanship is on the rise and <a href=\"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/our-solutions\/rebuilding-trust-in-government\/dashboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public faith in federal institutions is low<\/a>, the Partnership for Public Service and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datafoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Data Foundation<\/a> share a mutual dedication to the important task of building trust in government.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of its work to build the capacity of agencies to deliver for diverse audiences, the Partnership conducts <a href=\"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/publications\/the-state-of-public-trust-in-government-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a> that offers insights into how the public perceives government and what can be done to improve those perceptions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among other findings, several alarming trends emerged in our work: Only 34% of respondents believe the federal government is accountable, while a significant 62% do not; and merely 21% agree that the federal government is transparent, with a strong majority, 70% disagreeing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe title=\"Views of the federal government\" aria-label=\"Split Bars\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-ZCiT2\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/ZCiT2\/1\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" height=\"132\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><script type=\"text\/javascript\">!function(){\"use strict\";window.addEventListener(\"message\",(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll(\"iframe\");for(var t in a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"])for(var r=0;r<e.length;r++)if(e[r].contentWindow===a.source){var i=a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"][t]+\"px\";e[r].style.height=i}}}))}();<\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-while-these-numbers-highlight-challenges-they-also-present-an-opportunity-for-the-government-to-reset-its-relationship-with-the-public-through-improved-federal-data-practices\">While these numbers highlight challenges, they also present an opportunity for the government to reset its relationship with the public through improved federal data practices\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Implementing robust data collection, management and dissemination practices can serve as a step toward greater accountability and transparency. However, systematically addressing significant risks related to AI is paramount to ensuring its responsible use by the government and other entities. (The Partnership offers its <a href=\"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/course\/ai-federal-leadership-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI Federal Leadership Program<\/a> to support this objective.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clearly communicating the uses of data and evidence<\/strong> through appropriate channels is crucial. Translating analytics into accessible language and stories can help provide a sense of security and trust to the American public.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Collaboration is key<\/strong> to successful data and evidence-based projects. Effective collaboration across communities and partners is instrumental to the success of various federal initiatives.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a lot of parallels between the Partnership and the Data Foundation\u2019s trust in government work.
