A paid internship for undergraduate and graduate students, the Future Leaders program helps bring<strong> <\/strong>highly skilled talent from across the country into government and enables students to apply their educational training to work at a federal agency.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Partnership hosted an event this September to kick off the fall 2023 program, featuring 30 interns from 20 universities in 14 states. Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Science Foundation<\/a>, provided keynote remarks, offering advice to the young leaders as they embarked on their journey into the world of public service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-next-generation-will-shape-the-world-nbsp\">The next generation will shape the world&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Panchanathan delivered a powerful message to a room full of public servants, emphasizing their critical role in shaping our nation\u2019s future.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll of you are going to be the leaders who are going to shape, transform and have impactful futures for our nation because of your ideas, your creativity, your determination, your excellence [and] your hard work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program - Fall 2023 Kickoff Event 01\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/880643177?h=bdfd1256de&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Panchanathan stressed that the interns\u2019 curiosity will help our government unlock new knowledge and ideas that can expand our understanding of the world, strengthen all communities and help solve important challenges.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Breaking down the essence of leadership <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>He also shared invaluable insights on leadership, explaining how 10 essential components of the word can be summarized by the acronym LEADERSHIP:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Future Leaders in Public Service Internship Program - Fall 2023 Kickoff Event 02\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/880644547?h=c024074fa0&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>L is for Learning:<\/strong> He emphasized the importance of continuous learning, explaining how every moment is an opportunity to learn and serve.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>E is for Excellence:<\/strong> He highlighted that excellence is a magnet for opportunities and success and advocated for the pursuit of excellence in all endeavors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A is for Aspiration: <\/strong>He reminded the audience to focus on what they want to do, because that will automatically lead to what they want to become.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>D is for Discipline:<\/strong> He noted how discipline is the cornerstone of achievement, urging the young leaders to approach their work with unwavering dedication.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>E is for Energy: <\/strong>He said that people are attracted to others based on the energy they put into the world. \u201cIf you love what you do, how can you not have energy?\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>R is for Research: <\/strong>He emphasized the importance of having a research mindset, because it fosters curiosity and can lead to building strong relationships.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>S is for Service: <\/strong>He said that each student was in the room because of a desire to serve.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>H is for Humility: <\/strong>He believes that humility is synonymous with strength, and he discussed how great leaders are people who express humility in everything they do.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I is for Innovation: <\/strong>He called for the relentless pursuit of innovation, urging students to never settle for the status quo.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>P is for Partners and the People: <\/strong>He emphasized that true leadership is about collective effort, highlighting the importance of collaboration and community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panchanathan\u2019s remarks made clear that the Future Leaders interns are not just passive listeners but active torchbearers of a brighter future.
