{"id":37713,"date":"2023-05-17T16:40:07","date_gmt":"2023-05-17T20:40:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/?p=37713"},"modified":"2023-08-09T09:36:39","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T13:36:39","slug":"our-government-explained-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/blog\/our-government-explained-series\/","title":{"rendered":"A new video series that explains how our federal government works"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Understanding how our federal government works can be challenging, and many people are unaware of what it does to impact their daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, the Partnership\u2019s new video series can help folks better understand our largest democratic institution and the more than 2 million full-time civilian employees who work there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first season of \u201cOur government explained (in three minutes or less)\u201d will consist of four videos covering such topics as who are federal employees and what kind of jobs they perform, how federal agencies keep our country safe and secure, how the presidential transition process works and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dispelling-myths-about-the-federal-workforce\"><strong>Dispelling myths about the federal workforce<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first video in the series, titled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/hZEfuOhib_E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Who is the career workforce?<\/a>,\u201d discusses where in the country federal employees work, the diversity of the federal workforce and the wide range of jobs civil servants do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also addresses some common misconceptions about federal workers. For example, did you know most federal employees don\u2019t work in and around Washington D.C.?, In fact, nearly 80% of federal jobs are located outside our nation\u2019s capital and in communities all across the country and around the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Our Government Explained (in 3 Minutes or Less): Who Is the Career Workforce?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hZEfuOhib_E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The federal workforce also consists of more than the elected officials and political appointees who hold office and lead agencies. In truth, the bulk of the workforce is composed of 2 million nonelected, career civil servants who specialize in a wide range of fields and design, launch and implement critical public services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/servicetoamericamedals.org\/honorees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 Service to America Medals\u00ae finalists<\/a> are but a few examples of the dedicated public servants who work in government. One team played a major role in <a href=\"https:\/\/servicetoamericamedals.org\/honorees\/fletcher-schoen-jennifer-harkins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">securing the release of 11 American prisoners<\/a> wrongfully detained in Russia and Venezuela, including Brittney Griner. Others helped deliver critical <a href=\"https:\/\/servicetoamericamedals.org\/honorees\/laura-k-cooper-and-the-russia-ukraine-and-eurasia-policy-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">military<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/servicetoamericamedals.org\/honorees\/shadrach-ludeman-terah-yaroch-and-brooke-harding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">humanitarian<\/a> assistance to Ukraine, <a href=\"https:\/\/servicetoamericamedals.org\/honorees\/blane-workie-robert-gorman-jessica-ilich\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">held airlines accountable<\/a> for refunding travelers for canceled or significantly delayed flights, <a href=\"https:\/\/servicetoamericamedals.org\/honorees\/melissa-emrey-arras\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increased access<\/a> to federal student aid and loan forgiveness, and more. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Putting our mission to work<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Partnership is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to building a better government and a stronger democracy. A core part of this mission focuses on bridging the gap between our government and the people it serves, increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/publications\/trust-in-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public trust<\/a> in the institution by both helping it work better and recognizing what it does to protect our health, safety and well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our new explainer series is one of the ways the Partnership is working to do just that.
