Heyman Service to America Medals<\/a>\u00ae program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we are featuring three leaders at the Architect of the Capitol: Chief Security Officer Valerie Hasberry, James Kaufmann, director of the Capitol Grounds and Arboretum, and Mark Reed, superintendent of the U.S. Capitol and Capitol Visitor Center. The team is a finalist for the Management Excellence Medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This team led the cleanup, restoration and enhanced security of the U.S. Capitol building and grounds following the Jan. 6 insurrection, ensuring that the work of Congress would continue and the presidential inauguration would take place two weeks later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your best career advice?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Valerie Hasberry<\/strong>: To always leave a place better than you found it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>James Kaufmann:<\/strong> Always be patient and be consistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mark Reed:<\/strong> Take a risk or accept a challenge and be accountable for your mistakes. It is far less damaging to own up and move on than it is to try to excuse yourself or place blame elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s one fun or surprising thing we should know about you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VH:<\/strong> My favorite hobby is genealogy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JK:<\/strong> I love hiking in our national parks with my wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MR<\/strong>: I\u2019ve visited all 50 states in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who is your favorite public servant?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VH:<\/strong> Seikichi Kaneshiro, also known as \u201cMr. Paul,\u201d who retired from the Air Force after 66 years of service in the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JK:<\/strong> I admire Colin Powell, former secretary of state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MR:<\/strong> My favorite public servant is Anthony Fauci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is your favorite thing about working for the U.S. government?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VH:<\/strong> That I have the opportunity to continue serving and to do it in support of the best known symbol of democracy in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JK:<\/strong> To know that I am doing my part to keep government working and leaving a lasting mark on the historic grounds of the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MR:<\/strong> Having the opportunity to maintain and preserve the historic and significant building that represents American democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What object would you save if your house was on fire?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VH:<\/strong> I would save my portable drive with family photos and genealogy records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JK:<\/strong> I would grab a fire extinguisher and my phone!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MR:<\/strong> Photos and videos of my family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you have pets?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VH:<\/strong> We have four dogs named Kaine, Kona, Hazel and Bear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MR:<\/strong> I have one dog named Snickers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are you reading, watching or listening to?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VH:<\/strong> Brene Brown\u2019s \u201cAtlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience\u201d and genealogical standard books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JK:<\/strong> \u201cThe First Conspiracy\u201d by Brad Meltzer and Josh Mensch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MR:<\/strong> I\u2019m listening to a podcast called \u201cUp and Vanished.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your favorite takeout order or favorite thing to cook?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>VH:<\/strong> Lasagna is one of my favorite things to cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JK:<\/strong> Cooking chicken on the grill is a favorite dish of mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MR:<\/strong> I love to both order and make pizza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Read the team\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/servicetoamericamedals.org\/honorees\/valerie-hasberry-james-kaufmann-mark-reed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">full profile<\/a> and visit <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/servicetoamericamedals.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>servicetoamericamedals.org<\/em><\/a><em> to learn more about the other 2022 Sammies finalists for the Management Excellence Medal.&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During Public Service Recognition Week 2022, the Partnership is spotlighting some finalists in each award category for this fall\u2019s Samuel J.
