As the initiative\u2019s first participants begin their federal agency work, applications to join the next cohort are now open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inaugural class of ten future cybersecurity leaders brings a variety of academic and professional experience to the federal government and is more racially and ethnically diverse than the national cybersecurity talent pool trends<sup><a href=\"#_ftn1\">1<\/a><\/sup>. These recent college graduates will serve a two-year placement at one of six federal agencies before being invited to apply for positions with one of the initiative\u2019s corporate partners, and once hired, will receive up to $75,000 in student loan assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\n2020, there will be more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberseek.org\/heatmap.html\">507,000\nunfilled U.S. cybersecurity jobs<\/a>. The COVID-19 pandemic has\nillustrated the critical need for competent and highly-skilled workers\u2014in both\nthe public and private sectors\u2014to protect the security and health of all Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Max\nStier, president and CEO of the Partnership for Public Service, the\norganization operating the initiative, said the COVID-19 pandemic and its\nfallout have illustrated the critical need for competent and highly-skilled\nworkers in every sector of the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\npandemic is showing us what happens when an underprepared federal government\nfaces a disaster. Our reliance on remote work and learning through technology\nunderscores the critical need to prepare for and safeguard against cyber\nthreats,\u201d said Max Stier, president and CEO of the Partnership. \u201cWe can\u2019t wait\nfor another emergency to shore up our talent pipeline and staff the government\nwith cybersecurity experts, and that is why the Cybersecurity Talent Initiative\nis so important,\u201d Stier said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nCybersecurity Talent Initiative inaugural class includes <a href=\"https:\/\/cybertalentinitiative.org\/about\/current-cohort\/#michelle-massarik\">Michelle Massarik<\/a>, a graduate from the State\nUniversity of New York at Albany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI received my Bachelor of Science in\ncybersecurity and a minor in homeland security, and I really wanted to explore\ncybersecurity and infrastructure security,\u201d Massarik said. \u201cAs a new college\ngrad, I was unsure of what cybersecurity areas I wanted to pursue, but this\ninitiative assisted me with career and professional development to make the\ntransition from university as smooth as possible. Service in the federal\ngovernment also gives me a chance to apply my skills in a way that will make a\ndifference to the lives of all Americans. I am really excited to bring my\nknowledge and experience into the working world.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ninaugural class also includes graduates from The George Washington University; John\nJay College of Criminal Justice; Maryville University; State University of New\nYork at Albany; Marymount University; Regent University; University of Maryland\nGlobal Campus; Howard University and Western Governors University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Federal\nagencies participating in the Cybersecurity Talent Initiative include the\nCentral Intelligence Agency, Departments of Defense, Energy, Health and Human\nServices, and Homeland Security, Environmental Protection Agency, Federal\nBureau of Investigation, Federal Election Commission, National Oceanic and\nAtmospheric Administration and the Office of Naval Intelligence. Corporate\npartners include Mastercard, Microsoft and Workday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applications\nfor the second cohort are now open. Students completing undergraduate or\ngraduate degree programs in cybersecurity-related fields are encouraged to\napply. Agencies will make\noffers by spring 2021 and participants will start in the summer or fall of\n2021.
