{"id":23286,"date":"2021-01-26T16:07:00","date_gmt":"2021-01-26T21:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/?p=23286"},"modified":"2021-01-26T16:07:04","modified_gmt":"2021-01-26T21:07:04","slug":"lets-talk-about-the-elephant-in-the-room-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/blog\/lets-talk-about-the-elephant-in-the-room-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"Let\u2019s talk about the elephant in the room: failure"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When I interviewed for my position at the Partnership for Public Service,&nbsp;I&nbsp;was&nbsp;asked&nbsp;to describe&nbsp;a time&nbsp;I&nbsp;failed and what&nbsp;I&nbsp;learned from it.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&nbsp;answered the question&nbsp;easily&nbsp;because&nbsp;I\u2019ve&nbsp;failed a lot. I mean&nbsp;<em>a lot<\/em><em>.&nbsp;<\/em>I failed&nbsp;getting into the U.S.&nbsp;Air Force.&nbsp;I failed the State Department\u2019s&nbsp;and&nbsp;Defense Department\u2019s&nbsp;Arabic&nbsp;language test.&nbsp;I failed&nbsp;at&nbsp;launching my own business.&nbsp;And&nbsp;I failed&nbsp;to become a successful musician.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet&nbsp;failure, while&nbsp;scary&nbsp;and&nbsp;painful,&nbsp;can also be&nbsp;instructive&nbsp;and&nbsp;breed self-awareness.&nbsp;We tend not to talk about failure, but&nbsp;it&nbsp;can provide&nbsp;important&nbsp;benefits&nbsp;in the long run.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-failure-is-scary\"><strong>Failure is\u00a0scary<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What if I fail? What will people think of me? Will I be able to recover?<em>&nbsp;<\/em>The&nbsp;unknown answers to these questions&nbsp;make&nbsp;failure scary. On the contrary, success&nbsp;fosters clarity. If you do a job well and achieve your intended outcome, you&nbsp;gain confidence in your&nbsp;abilities and feel more secure&nbsp;in&nbsp;yourself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-failure-is-painful\"><strong>Failure is&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>painful<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Failure can hurt\u00a0financially,\u00a0professionally\u00a0and emotionally. If you\u00a0pay money to take a course and you fail, you\u00a0have to\u00a0pay to take it again.\u00a0If you fail\u00a0at work, you might be terminated.\u00a0For\u00a0first\u00a0responders, military\u00a0personnel\u00a0and law enforcement, it could mean that people die.\u00a0The pain\u00a0triggered by\u00a0these failures can be\u00a0long-lasting.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-failure-is-instructive\"><strong>Failure is&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>instructive<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas Edison&nbsp;reportedly said, \u201cI didn\u2019t fail, I just found 10,000 ways that didn\u2019t work.\u201d&nbsp;As this quote suggests, failure&nbsp;can provide&nbsp;you&nbsp;with&nbsp;more knowledge about the way something&nbsp;doesn\u2019t&nbsp;work, freeing you&nbsp;up&nbsp;to&nbsp;experiment&nbsp;with&nbsp;new\u2014and potentially better\u2014ways of&nbsp;doing things.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-failure-breeds-self-awareness\"><strong>Failure&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>breed<\/strong><strong>s<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;self-awareness<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Leadership coaches\u00a0preach\u00a0that\u00a0failure\u00a0is the best way to grow because it\u00a0requires you to\u00a0take a deep look at\u00a0yourself and your\u00a0actions. Through this, you gain self-awareness, reduce your blind spots, learn\u00a0new\u00a0methods\u00a0and see things from different perspectives.\u00a0Success\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0always\u00a0lead to\u00a0this\u00a0level of\u00a0introspection.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-going-forward-fail-and-fail-often\"><strong>Going forward, fail and fail often!<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So,\u00a0let\u2019s\u00a0be real. Failure happens to all of us. While we never want to fail,\u00a0we\u00a0inevitably will.
