{"id":22006,"date":"2020-10-29T10:51:42","date_gmt":"2020-10-29T14:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/opsweb.wpengine.com\/?p=22006"},"modified":"2020-11-20T17:12:35","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T22:12:35","slug":"how-one-public-private-partnership-is-closing-the-cybersecurity-talent-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/blog\/how-one-public-private-partnership-is-closing-the-cybersecurity-talent-gap\/","title":{"rendered":"How one public-private partnership is closing the cybersecurity talent gap"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Partnership for Public Service recently launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/cybertalentinitiative.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cybersecurity Talent Initiative<\/a> to address an emerging crisis in our country: the shortage of well-trained cybersecurity professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative is a first-of-its kind public-private partnership designed to reduce this talent gap. Participants work for two years at a federal agency before applying for full-time positions with the program\u2019s private sector partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program is ideal for students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in cybersecurity-related fields, such as computer science, engineering and information systems, and offers substantial student loan assistance. Overall, the initiative serves as a call to action for leading companies, federal agencies and higher education institutions to come together and develop the next generation of motivated, mission-driven cybersecurity leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we commemorate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/national-cyber-security-awareness-month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Cybersecurity Awareness Month<\/a> amid a pandemic that has made us more reliant on digital technology, organizations across the U.S. need to prepare for and safeguard against cyber threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Including our federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/fedscope.opm.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office of Personnel Management<\/a> reports that cybersecurity professionals accounted for just 5% of the federal government\u2019s 2.1 million full-time civilian employees as of December 2019[1]. In addition, a majority of those professionals are over 50 years old and nearing retirement, while only 12% of them are under the age of 35.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberseek.org\/heatmap.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent data<\/a> shows an increasingly high demand for qualified cybersecurity professionals in the private sector, which listed nearly half a million job openings in the field between June 2019 and June 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe cyber world is the wild, wild west,\u201d former President Obama <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/02\/14\/business\/obama-urges-tech-companies-to-cooperate-on-internet-security.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">once said<\/a>, \u201cand to some degree [the federal government] is asked to be the sheriff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This latest workforce data suggests that our sheriff needs a few more deputies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizations in both the public and private sectors need highly skilled workers capable of handling complex cyber threats.
