Heyman <a href=\"https:\/\/servicetoamericamedals.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Service to America Medals<\/a> awards program on Oct. 5, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella discussed the importance of public-private partnerships and effective leadership, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I\u2019ve come to realize is it takes all of us \u2014 civic society, the government and the civil service, the people who build the institutions our democracies depend on, as well as private organizations. We all need each other,\u201d Nadella said. A critical part of Microsoft\u2019s mission is to help government use new technology to respond to crises and innovate on behalf of the people in this country, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the Partnership awarded Nadella the Spirit of Service medal for fostering Microsoft\u2019s spirit of innovation, leveraging technology to improve cross-sector partnerships, and committing the company to racial justice and environmental stewardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"#Sammies2020 Spirit of Service Awardee Satya Nadella and Ford Foundation president Darren Walker\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4g0lnjfH8rM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the event, Ford Foundation President Darren Walker spoke with Nadella about his leadership style and an important lesson he learned over the course of his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not about what you achieved during your tenure; it\u2019s about the strength that you\u2019ve built during your tenure that makes the institution thrive even more after you leave it,\u201d Nadella said. \u201cThat\u2019s how I look at my own work at Microsoft. I know every civil servant who comes in and pushes their own institution forward is trying to do the same, and that\u2019s what inspires me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walker also praised Nadella for his compassion and empathy as a leader, citing his response to the George Floyd murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that it is very hard to lead during times like this.
