Yet, this won\u2019t be the first difficult transition. Abraham\nLincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt faced extraordinary challenges after winning\ntheir first presidential elections, and they still took full advantage of the\ntime before their inaugurations to set their presidencies up for success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These key transitions were the topic of three recent episodes of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/presidentialtransition.org\/transition-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\">Transition Lab<\/a>, a podcast from the Partnership\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/presidentialtransition.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Center for Presidential Transition<\/a>, hosted by David Marchick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-from-hoover-to-fdr\"><strong>From Hoover to FDR <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The transition was rocky after Roosevelt was elected in the\nmidst of the Great Depression to succeed Herbert Hoover, explained Professor\nEric Rauchway, an expert on the New Deal and the Progressive Era. The two men\ndid not have a good relationship. After Roosevelt survived an assassination\nattempt less than three weeks before his inauguration, Hoover wrote him a\nletter that, rather than expressing his relief at Roosevelt\u2019s escape, blamed him\nfor the ongoing financial crisis and instructed him to disavow the New Deal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, Roosevelt spent his\ntransition building a cabinet and preparing to pass New Deal legislation.\n\u201cHe begins to take advice from experts, politicians and industry leaders over\nhow best to pass the legislation he promised during the campaign,\u201d Rauchway\nsaid. &#8220;He tries to get \u2026 people in his party and sympathetic members of\nthe Republican Party on his side. The president-elect took a 13-day train journey\nfrom Illinois to Washington, D.C., on the way to his inauguration, rallying public\nsupport and setting the tone for his presidency as he traveled from town to\ntown giving speeches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut also, these 13 days were so important for him developing that moral argument for America&#8217;s greatness, that we&#8217;re not just a large country and a powerful country,\u201d Widmer said. &#8220;We are a great country for our moral standards\u2014that we have dared to declare human rights for all people, not only in our country, but all people on Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-worst-transition-in-u-s-history-with-ted-widmer\/id1495404153?i=1000477985234\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">The Worst Transition in U.S. History, with Ted Widmer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-letting-past-transitions-guide-the-future\"><strong>Letting past\ntransitions guide the future <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In another episode, documentarian Ken Burns stressed the\nimportance of studying history. He said he felt optimistic looking back on past\ntransitions, noting that great leaders can apply the lessons of history to\ntheir current situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn fact, one great, if not&nbsp;the greatest,&nbsp;measure\nof leadership is, are you part of the solution or are you part of the problem?\u201d\nBurns said.&nbsp;\u201cIt is very fashionable to say that history repeats itself. It\nnever, ever has\u2014ever.
