Credits: NASA\/Carla Thomas.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people wouldn\u2019t think of NASA, the organization that sends astronauts into space and rovers to Mars, as having a role in the fight against COVID-19. But NASA engineers have developed a ventilator and an oxygen helmet to help coronavirus patients, adapting the items from projects already underway, and have already received emergency use authorization from the FDA. In addition to the new equipment developed, NASA employees submitted more than 200 ideas for other ways the agency can help in the fight against COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur employees are driven by a desire to do things that have never been done before,\u201d said Steve Jurczyk, NASA\u2019s associate administrator. He added that NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine directed the senior leadership team to see how NASA could use its expertise and technology to help the nation. \u201cMy job is to enable the workforce to do the amazing things we have asked them to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineers\nteam up and design ventilator<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In March, two engineers at NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory\njust outside of Los Angeles, who worked together on the Mars landing missions, formed\na team of engineers to address the shortage of ventilators used to treat\nCOVID-19 and how they could make effective, easy-to-produce ventilators. The\nteam came up with several designs, \u201cembodying the spirit of innovation at\nNASA,\u201d Jurczyk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within weeks, the team was testing the designs in its labs\nand at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. \u201cTheir\nventilator design takes one-seventh of the parts of commercial ones and are\nmade up of parts that are readily available and easy to use,\u201d Jurczyk added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A tight-knit community works together to\ndevelop oxygen helmet<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If any organization knows about providing oxygen to\nthe body, it\u2019s NASA. That\u2019s why doctors at Antelope Valley Hospital in\nLancaster, California, sought help from NASA engineers working just down the\nroad at NASA\u2019s Armstrong Flight Research Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe hospital staff approached our engineers and asked\nthem to design a helmet that would force oxygen into the lungs for COVID-19 patients\nwith minor symptoms, but who didn\u2019t need a ventilator,\u201d Jurczyk said. The\nengineers worked with the doctors to design and test prototypes and provided\nthe design concepts and results to companies that could build and distribute\nthe helmets. In late April, one company began initial production of 500 units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>250 more ideas in the works<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA offers a platform called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/coeci\/nasa-at-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">NASA@WORK<\/a>, on which employees can post a challenge that other employees can help solve. Several recent ideas have centered on the nation\u2019s needs during the coronavirus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One idea led engineers \u201cat Goddard Space Flight Center [in Greenbelt, Maryland] to develop a breathalyzer that can detect COVID-19 antibodies by using nanotube technology,\u201d Jurczyk said.
