It may be the first time these interns have worked in a traditional office and, in the current situation, they must navigate their virtual or hybrid internships. Ensuring they feel connected to your team and your agency\u2019s work is key to helping them work effectively. Here are five tips for engaging your interns throughout their programs: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Include interns in important meetings, even if just to observe<\/strong>. Attending these meetings can enhance their understanding of your office\u2019s work and strategic priorities, and how both align to the agency\u2019s mission. It also introduces them to important players and the major decision-makers. <\/li><li><strong>Assign interns specific long-term projects.<\/strong> This responsibility will keep them engaged with their work. Whether it\u2019s researching relevant news articles or responding to external stakeholders, give your interns responsibility for at least one or two activities or tasks that they need to work on daily or weekly. <\/li><li><strong>Have interns routinely update their teams on their work<\/strong>. Adding time to team meetings for interns to present updates on their projects ensures they\u2019re held accountable for their performance and shows your team\u2019s support. This also gives them opportunities to practice and hone their written and oral virtual presentation skills.&nbsp; <\/li><li><strong>Always attend scheduled check-ins<\/strong>. Consistent interaction between you and your interns shows you\u2019re invested in their experience, committed to their growth and development, and value their work, so be sure to attend check-ins as scheduled. <\/li><li><strong>Provide regular, ongoing performance feedback.<\/strong> The only way interns will know if they\u2019re on the right track is through your feedback. Schedule time to let them know what they\u2019re doing well and what they need to improve. Gain an understanding of their perspectives and ask what you can do to improve their experience.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-more-resources-for-supervising-remote-interns\"><strong>More resources for supervising remote interns<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Partnership encourages agencies to look to the <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/vsfs.state.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Virtual Student Federal Service<\/a>\u2014an eight-month remote internship program\u00a0managed by the\u00a0State Department\u00a0that offers students the opportunity to work from wherever they are\u2014for additional information on how to manage remote interns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nora Dempsey, senior advisor for innovation at VSFS, said the secrets to the program\u2019s success throughout the past 10 years are \u201ca combination of saying yes, staying flexible and always answering emails with kindness.\u201d She suggested regularly video chatting with interns to keep you both connected and energized. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Check out &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/bestplacestowork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/04\/Engaging-a-Remote-Workforce-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Engaging a Remote Workforce<\/a>&#8221; to learn more how to support employees and maintain organizational performance in a remote working environment.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post is the second in a three-part series on how to ensure a successful remote experience for interns and supervisors.
