At a virtual town hall April 21, Doug Conant\u2014CEO of ConantLeadership and a Partnership board member\u2014shared five concepts to help leaders carry out their responsibilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. \u201cLeadership is sacred ground because you impact the lives of others everyday with your leadership behaviors,\u201d he said. \u201cTherefore, you have to treat it as if it is sacred ground and work hard at it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The points Conant offered at the event, called \u201cLeading\nThrough Crisis,\u201d apply to both the current crisis and other crises leaders may\nface. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. It\u2019s\nnot about you.<\/strong> \u201cIt\u2019s all about the people who work with\nyou,\u201d he said. \u201cEnsure you know where people are coming from and search for\nways to meet their needs while you\u2019re delivering the agenda of your enterprise.\u201d\n<\/li>
  2. \u201cHow\u201d\nis more important than \u201cwhat.\u201d<\/strong> \u201cWhat you can do is\nfigure out how you manage the \u2018what\u2019 day-to-day by creating certainty for your\nteam,\u201d he said, suggesting large crises be broken into three pieces: the\ncrisis, the transformation from the old way to the new way and the new normal.<\/li>
  3. Clarity\nand connection are next to godliness.<\/strong> \u201cIf there is a clear\nagenda, people know what to do and people follow it,\u201d he said, highlighting\nthat it\u2019s equally important to ask your colleagues if they understand the task\nand agenda, and for them to repeat it back. <\/li>
  4. Communicate.\nCommunicate. Communicate.<\/strong> It\u2019s vital to keep people as up to\ndate as you can and create communications plans to help convey messages in\nsystematic fashion. <\/li>
  5. Heightened\ntransparency and gratitude will serve you well in times like these.<\/strong> It\u2019s\nimportant to \u201cfind a new gear and take your transparency and gratitude to a new\nplace,\u201d he said. In a crisis, be sure to \u201ccelebrate what works because it adds\nto the clarity of the message.\u201d <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
