More than 130 federal employees from 45 different agencies answered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some responses came from federal\nemployees in their first year of service, while others came from people who\nhave served for decades. No matter the length of their government tenure, the people\nwho shared their accounts are doing important work for our government that\nbenefits the country as a whole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are their accomplishments about\nsaving lives, protecting the environment and recruiting the next generation of\npublic servants:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safety<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ensuring the safety of astronauts by working on\nspace shuttles\u2019 payload safety requirements. (Howard K., NASA)<\/li><li>Preventing hundreds of faulty medical devices,\nincluding ventilators and infusion pumps, from being distributed for public\nuse. (Kirtida P., Food and Drug Administration) <\/li><li>Managing a communications campaign at the\nConsumer Product Safety Commission to prevent drowning in pools and spas for\nchildren younger than 15 that resulted in a 14% decrease in childhood\ndrownings. (Ellyn P., Census Bureau)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Environment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Managing a legal case about the mining\nindustry\u2019s harm to migratory birds that resulted in modified mining practices\nand compensation to the public for lost natural resources. (Dori R., National\nNuclear Security Administration) <\/li><li>Leading the effort to preserve historically\nsignificant records of wildland fire incident management for responders to use\nas references. (Richard B., National Archives and Records Administration) <\/li><li>Quickly analyzing water samples from Flint,\nMichigan, to help the government respond to the city\u2019s water crisis. (Katie A.,\nEnvironmental Protection Agency)<\/li><li>Cleaning up a former nuclear production site and\npreparing it for community use. (Melody B., Department of Energy) <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recruiting and hiring<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Co-founding the Presidential Innovation Fellows\nProgram at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to bring\ntech talent into public service. (Arianne G., Office of Personnel Management)<\/li><li>Instituting the first student trainee program in\nan office at the Customs and Border Protection, which transitioned 90% of\ninterns to permanent employees. (Tameka B., Customs and Border Protection)<\/li><li>Planning and organizing review panels to select\n62 students across the country to be the 2020 recipients of the Truman\nScholarship, which provides $30,000 toward a graduate degree in public service.\n(Ellen D., Harry S.
