It often takes\na crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic for us to remember how important federal\nemployees are to our daily lives. Our nation\u2019s civil servants defend our\nshores, protect our computer networks and secure our financial institutions.\nThey safeguard travelers and our vast transportation systems. They lead\nscientific discoveries, develop new medical treatments, ensure we have clean\nair and water, and much more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In celebration of Public Service Recognition Week<\/a>, here are just a few of the critical professions in the federal workforce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Information Technology Managers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Federal agencies\ndepend on information technology managers for many things: processing tens of millions\nof tax returns, protecting our nation\u2019s most sensitive data and classified\ninformation, developing software and managing systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s unsurprising, then, that IT managers represent the second\nlargest occupational group in the federal workforce after general administrative\nsupport staff. As of June 2019, the roughly 83,000 IT managers across\ngovernment made up more than 4% of all full-time federal employees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nurses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Nurses make\nup the third-largest occupational group in the federal workforce. While some of\nthem serve in civilian roles at the Department of Defense or at the public\nhealth agencies of the Department of Health and Human Services, more than 80% of\nfederal nurses are employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to caring for our veterans and serving on the front lines<\/a> in the fight against COVID-19, the federal government\u2019s 82,000 full-time nurses also teach, conduct research and provide critical health care in communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emergency Management Specialists<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Even before\nthe coronavirus pandemic, many agency leaders saw the need for a robust cohort\nof federal employees dedicated to helping the nation prepare for and respond to\ncrises. That\u2019s why emergency management specialists\u2014although they number around\n2,500\u2014are the fastest growing occupational group in the federal workforce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From fiscal\n2014 to 2018, the number of emergency management specialists grew by almost 33%.\nThese employees work across dozens of agencies, including the Federal Emergency\nManagement Agency, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Veterans Health\nAdministration and the Department of Energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognize a Public Servant<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

IT managers, nurses and emergency management specialists are\na small slice of the 2.1 million federal employees whose work affects us all. The\ncontinued work of federal employees helps our nation overcome major challenges.\nThis week and always, we should recognize them for their service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
