The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/policy-data-oversight\/performance-management\/performance-management-cycle\/planning\/managing-teleworkers-requires-topnotch-performance-management-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\">Office of Personnel Management<\/a> and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gsa.gov\/governmentwide-initiatives\/telework\/resources-for-managing-teleworkers\" target=\"_blank\">General Services Administration<\/a> released robust guidance to help managers best support their employees as they telework on a more permanent basis. Below are four of their best practices for managing remote teams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Develop\nand manage clear expectations for your employees. <\/strong>OPM emphasizes the importance of creating\nplans for your employees\u2019 work, as the coronavirus pandemic may have shifted\nyour agency\u2019s priorities. These plans should set expectations for the\nassignments your employees are working on and include timelines and desired\nresults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you\u2019re\nunable to stop by your employees\u2019 desks for quick, informal check-ins, these plans\ncan help ensure that both you and your employees understand your expectations. Reinforce\nthese expectations often in your written and verbal communications with your\nemployees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Find new\nways to monitor your team\u2019s performance. <\/strong>Once you have developed performance expectations for your\nemployees, establish standards to measure them, acknowledging that the\ntransition to telework might require you to determine new and unique measures\nof success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GSA suggests\ncreating a dashboard of quantitative and qualitative measures, such as customer\nservice and employee productivity. OPM reminds supervisors to communicate these\nchanges with their team and offer regular and ongoing performance coaching and\nfeedback. You should make extra efforts to recognize high-performing employees to\nmake sure they feel just as involved and appreciated as they would in the\noffice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Use technology to build teams. <\/strong>GSA encourages supervisors to use technology, such as instant messaging and social media, to help their employees stay connected. Message your employees in the morning or afternoon to check-in. Organize casual events, such as virtual coffee breaks, virtual pizza parties or even book clubs or meditation classes. These informal team interactions promote belonging and a sense of normalcy amidst the sudden transition into telework. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Be flexible.\n<\/strong>Acknowledge that\nyour employees are balancing personal and professional responsibilities while\nworking from home. Expect each employee to have different rhythms and settle in\nat different times, so give them space to transition to their new workstyle. GSA\nencourages you to remember that your employees may need to change their work\nschedule or projects.
