Both the public and private sectors are facing enormous\ncybersecurity challenges that are only going to get bigger and more complicated.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/news.clearancejobs.com\/2018\/04\/24\/cybersecurity-fastest-growing-job-huge-skills-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">ClearanceJobs <\/a>article states that although cybersecurity is the fastest growing field, 51% of companies report a shortage of cybersecurity skills. This can only mean one thing, at least for job seekers: It\u2019s a great time to start a career in cybersecurity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people have\nmisconceptions about what cybersecurity jobs entail. I can\u2019t tell you how many\ntimes people have said to me, \u201coh you must be a good hacker if you are working\nin cybersecurity.\u201d I mentally roll my eyes, but it\u2019s a reality that not a lot\nof people understand that cybersecurity is a broad field with many different\npaths. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is especially true\nin the federal landscape. You don\u2019t have to be a hacker, a developer or a\ncomputer scientist to land a job in cybersecurity. Even without cyber-related\ntechnical training, you could work within the cybersecurity field in positions\nsuch as policy analyst, program manager or data scientist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you don\u2019t have a degree in cybersecurity, you can still pursue a career in the field. I know, because that\u2019s what I did. I studied chemical engineering, but I now work in federal cybersecurity. The position I found didn\u2019t require specialized training or certifications, but I chose to pursue free training within the Defense Acquisition University<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dau.edu\/\"> <\/a>and the <a href=\"https:\/\/fedvte.usalearning.gov\/coursecat_external.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Federal Virtual Training Environment (opens in a new tab)\">Federal Virtual Training Environment<\/a> at the Department of Homeland Security. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also subscribed to newsletters such as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/threatpost.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ThreatPost<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifthdomain.com\/\">Fifth Domain<\/a> to familiarize myself with the cybersecurity landscape. And I read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/cyberframework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">NIST Cybersecurity Framework<\/a>, which federal agencies use to guide their cybersecurity efforts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you\u2019re interested in specific jobs such as ethical hacker, network engineer, vulnerability analyst or penetration tester, you will need specialized training and certifications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to understand that cybersecurity threats change constantly and quickly, and certifications are not a guarantee that technologies, processes and techniques employed will provide successful responses to cybersecurity challenges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key to pursuing a successful cybersecurity career is to be flexible and willing to adjust course when looking for ways to solve cyber-related problems, while staying focused on the end goal\u2014keeping our nation secure.
