{"id":11338,"date":"2019-08-08T13:25:49","date_gmt":"2019-08-08T17:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/opsweb.wpengine.com\/?p=11338"},"modified":"2021-07-01T12:10:13","modified_gmt":"2021-07-01T16:10:13","slug":"celebrating-30-years-of-the-excellence-in-government-fellows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/blog\/celebrating-30-years-of-the-excellence-in-government-fellows\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating 30 years of the Excellence in Government Fellows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At a 30th anniversary celebration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/programs\/excellence-in-government-fellows-program\/\">Excellence in Government Fellows<\/a> program last month, 115 alumni attended a professional development conference during which they reconnected with colleagues, <a>developed <\/a>new agency contacts and advanced their leadership skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the day\u2019s first session, Sean O\u2019Keefe, former NASA\nadministrator and Secretary of the Navy, spoke about his motivation for\nchoosing a career in public service, and the unique influence federal employees\nhave. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRegardless of what you do or what your job is, you impact\nsomeone,\u201d O\u2019Keefe said during a discussion with Andrew Marshall, the\nPartnership\u2019s director for leadership development. \u201cDedicate yourself to the\nidea that [this work] \u2018is bigger than me.\u2019 \u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On leadership, O\u2019Keefe emphasized the importance of getting\nto know employees and communicating with them early and often. Jeff O\u2019Malley, the Partnership\u2019s director for executive and team coaching, offered tools ranging from mindfulness micro-practices <a>to checking that vision, values and mission<\/a> are aligned. The information was directly applicable to the many attendees who are starting new roles or leading through change at their agencies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session on presence, led by EIG executive coaches Sheryl\nPhillips and Alison Miller, featured hands-on practice and feedback to strengthen\nalumni\u2019s ability to command a room. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe session was really useful for raising my own awareness\nof how I present myself and what I may be conveying to others through my\nposture or demeanor,\u201d Stacy Alboher said. \u201cIt made me think critically about if\nthe way I present myself is how I would like to present myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the change management session, led by Kevin Johnson, the\nPartnership\u2019s senior manager for business functional programs, alumni discussed\na framework to identify the types of tools and people needed to lead through\nchange. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/DSC_0489-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/DSC_0489-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/DSC_0489-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/DSC_0489-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/DSC_0489-1920x1282.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/DSC_0489-1200x801.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Kevin Johnson presenting to alumni during the Change Management breakout session.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The SES session featured a conversation between two former members\nof the Senior Executive Service\u2014Solly Thomas, an EIG executive coach, and Tim\nMcManus, the Partnership\u2019s chief operating officer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas delved into his leadership journey and shared advice on joining the SES. He&nbsp;encouraged alumni to be the \u201cfirst follower\u201d\u2014the courageous first person to follow a new movement or idea, and show others how to join in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day wrapped up with an overview of the Partnership\u2019s new\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ourpublicservice.org\/our-work\/public-service-leadership-model\/\">public\nservice leadership model<\/a>, which serves as a standard for effective federal\nleadership. Alumni were asked to reflect on examples of great government\nleadership and connect them to the model\u2019s values and competencies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Partnership hopes to provide more alumni events like\nthis one, particularly after learning through a post-event survey that 100% of attendees\nfound the content useful and would attend again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At a 30th anniversary celebration of the Excellence in Government Fellows program last month, 115 alumni attended a professional development conference during which they reconnected with colleagues, developed new agency contacts and advanced their leadership skills.
